The preppy style is still very much alive, redefined by a new theory. It has shifted from being a form of categorization, with identifiable codes within masculine and feminine wardrobes, to no less than a classic style that combines the white shirt with loafers and a striped sweater worn over the shoulders.
How can you get the preppy look without seeming to be trapped in a 1980s time warp? From the original look, we can keep the high-waist jeans, the monochrome ballet flats and the men's shirt. Out with the big hair, the headband and ‘hot potato in your mouth’ posh accent. Instead go for a simple haircut, such as a longer bob with or without bangs, and use that potato to maintain your energy levels as you accessorize this classic outfit.
Let’s move on to accessories. With an open-necked shirt, a delicate choker-style necklace will make your neckline look more feminine. The same goes for bracelets: we love to mismatch them, wearing more than one at a time to dress up a wrist emerging from a rolled-up sleeve. A belt is very important for emphasizing the waist and adding a feminine touch to the preppy outfit as a whole. We like to pick ones that are monochrome and thin, with an elegant buckle. As for the bottom half, the preppy style goes with lots of types of skirt and almost any pants. Regular or boyfriend jeans, cigarette pants or chinos, just make sure your ankles are on show. A pleated or pencil skirt will flatter your silhouette, giving you the British ‘posh spice’ look.
For shoes with a preppy look, loafers and ballet flats always go down well. We love the classic ballet flat, or ones with bows or little straps, Mary-Jane style. With loafers, we like to give their innocent look a twist with studs or cabochons, or to go the whole hog with the preppy style by adding pearls! The mule is also making a comeback in the chic girl’s wardrobe (see how to wear the loafer mule). A pair of black pumps will also be a stylish companion for your preppy look, or you could go for a low Chelsea boot. Finally, when it comes to bags, a clutch with a golden chain will be just the ticket.
Obviously black, navy blue, white, beige and ivory are the perfect colors for the preppy look. Pastel tones are also great for sunny days.
Almost any occasion works, without looking out of place. According to circumstance, the preppy look is appropriate most of the time. But take care! The preppy style is certainly a look, but it’s also an attitude, a way of life. So ladies, walk with poise, with your head held high! Blair Waldorf eat your heart out!
