Athleisure is wearing well
Nineties-inspired fashion is back on the runway starting blocks, getting set to define a new era of sportswear. Like it or not, the movement is continuing on into 2019 and growing stronger than ever, boosted by social media queens Kim Kardashian and Her Majesty Beyoncé.
Ever brighter primary colors, shorter tops, figure-hugging leggings and even cycling shorts are racing to the front of the fashion pack. The decade that saw the birth of the millennials is bringing back a clothing esthetic once consigned to college locker room history. Old school? Of course! But a brand-new sports scene with a modern edge is emerging both on and off the field.
Sportswear that normally lasts a few seasons before running out of steam is back in full force this year, and has been embraced by the major luxury fashion houses. Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga, Gucci and Valentino have all jumped on the bandwagon with their ultra-desirable sneakers, a trend reminiscent of the nineties. With crowd-pleasing technical fabrics, sweatshirts and hoodies, gym-inspired crop tops and logosà gogo, sportswear is primed to score highly in your closet this year. In its simplest form, the activewear and athleisure movement represents the desire for a healthy lifestyle and dynamic, high-performance fashion that feels comfortable.
For a sportswear look that’s not fresh from the gym, play around with sporty basics like hoodies, track jackets and track pants, adding a little touch of luxury. And don’t forget to slip on your favorite pair of Vanessa Wu white sequined Velcro sneakers or dad shoes. You can blend sportswear with tailoring for surprising results. Perfect your look by pairing tops with bottoms in a similar pattern or color and varying the cuts and fabrics. But accessories must be understated! Kasia Katner, a designer at Fil, agrees:
“A matching pattern—whether it’s a print, color or texture—is your statement. It does not need to be more colorful than your backpack or sneakers. Keep the rest muted and let the clever coordination speak for itself.”
With graphic nostalgia still going strong, the sportswear trend is set to continue, promising silhouettes of strong women, at ease in their Vanessa Wu sneakers. They pay no heed to others and make their own style rules. Dare to set the pace...
