Civil partnerships, graduations, civic honors, weddings and religious celebrations may not happen every day, but they all have one thing in common—the need for a stylish, special-occasion outfit and the perfect shoes to match. Step in our Celebration Edit, designed to offer you some insight into possible pairings of outfits and shoes for those big days both in your life and the lives of your family and friends.
On the face of it, your choice of wedding shoes depends on your body shape and the type of shoes you’re used to wearing. If you’ve never worn high-heeled shoes or sandals before, we strongly discourage you from walking down the aisle on your big day in a pair of 5-inch heels!
To choose the right pair of Vanessa Wu shoes for a wedding, there are three factors to bear in mind:
Classic, rock, boho-chic or romantic: modern weddings come in a myriad of styles and offer countless outfit options. Make the most of it! Once you’ve chosen a style and an outfit, you need to find the perfect shoes, bearing in mind the theme and color palette. High heels, mules, Derby shoes, sneakers, flat sandals and slingbacks are all a possibility—in your favorite color, of course. Try to add an original twist with a glitter version or jewel embellishment and beware of too much tone on tone (white on white), which can be jarring. According to Cosmopolitan magazine:
"ice white clashes totally with cream. It’s better to choose two completely different colors like cream and powder pink, or ice white and metallic silver.”
And don’t forget to do your research on the venue, especially where your feet will be treading. From parquet, to lawns, to gravel, it’s best to be prepared! To avoid scratching the floor or sinking into grass, give stilettos a miss and opt for a square or flat heel, like the pretty ballet flats that are making a comeback this year. In our experience, ballet flats are also a very wise choice for the reception!
A tribute to understatement (at least, in places of worship where footwear is permitted), shoes are all about subtlety at a religious ceremony. So, avoid heels that click-clack down the aisle and opt for flat shoes instead, like Derbies or loafers. If you’re a guest at a christening or first holy communion, your own take on a classic preppy style always goes down well.
Whether you’re attending the Grammys, the Oscars or a business awards ceremony, a dress code is compulsory at this type of event. But how do you conform to the code without losing your sparkle and personality? Find out what people are expected to wear to the event beforehand and add your own little twist to the official line. Need to wear a suit? Pimp it up with original jeweled sneakers. An evening dress? Strappy glitter sandals with a square heel will do the job nicely if you want to feel confident and comfortable. A uniform? Choose a pair of Vanessa Wu shoes to match your outfit. Brogues, classic slip-ons and Chelsea boots are all great choices for an escape from the office!
