How to wear the shirt dress?
The shirt dress epitomizes the liberation of post-war women. Long seen as a uniform worn by women working in fields, hospitals or in schools, the shirt dress is a symbol of female emancipation and empowerment.
In 1947, Christian Dior created the ‘Chérie’ dress, which not only launched the New Look, but also expressed both a new-found femininity and burning desire for independence. With buttons down the front, the ‘Chérie’ quickly became known for its modern silhouette and free-flowing, fluid movement. Any suggestion that this dress is nothing more than a plain little number best worn at home in small town America is now set to be shattered by Yves Saint Laurent, who has given it a Saharan twist with chest pockets and super-sexy lacing. This Saharan-style shirt dress is worn with a wide belt tied around the hips, to create an Amazonian desert warrior vibe.
This spring/summer, the shirt dress is making a big comeback and travels back in time to draw inspiration from all four corners of the world.
+ The wax print shirt dress: with this vivid look, wear nude pumps or Vanessa Wu jewel heeled sandals.
+ The broderie anglaise shirt dress: for a goody-two-shoes look choose navy blue or white and team with flat tennis stripe sandals or a beautiful pair of Vanessa Wu brogues.
+ The fifties shirt dress: inspired by Mad Men character Betty Draper with her ruffled dress, drawn in tightly at the waist and buttoned up to the hilt. Combine with pointy Vanessa Wu slingback pumps or a pair of kitten heels.
+ The minimalist shirt dress: monochrome and loose, wear with large sunglasses, a pretty cuff bracelet and gladiator sandals or Vanessa Wu peep-toe mules.
+ The denim shirt dress: for a boho-chic style, team with a straw hat, leopard clutch bag and Vanessa Wu low cut-out boots. As night falls, tie a scarf around your neck and don a biker jacket for an edgier rock chick style.
+ The Saharan shirt dress: beige or khaki, we love to wear it with high-heeled sandals with ribbons for ankle straps or with red or beige Vanessa Wu laced espadrille wedges!
